Navy runs from ink-blue to almost black
What colors go with navy?
Navy is the closest thing a wardrobe has to a universal partner: darker than most colors, softer than black, and calm enough that almost anything can sit next to it. The useful question is not whether something goes with navy, but which partner gives you the look you want.
Short answer
The colors that go best with navy are white, grey, camel, light blue, burgundy, mustard and rust. White and grey are the safest, camel adds warmth, light blue stays in the same family, and burgundy, mustard and rust give contrast.
- White: crisp and the most reliable pairing
- Grey: calm and office-friendly
- Camel: warm against cool, classic for coats and knits
- Light blue: tonal and easy, especially for shirts
- Burgundy: rich, dark-on-dark accent
- Mustard: golden yellow that glows against navy
- Rust: a warm near-opposite for autumn
- Coral: a bright summer accent
Navy trousers, two tops

Garment usedThe starting photo pairs navy wide-leg trousers with a white tank: clean and high-contrast. In the second frame only the top was changed, to a camel fine knit. Camel is warm and navy is cool, so the pair balances itself, and because camel is a mid-depth color the outfit looks softer and a little dressier than navy with white.
The tan loafers do quiet work here too: they repeat the camel at the other end of the outfit, which is a common way to make a two-color look feel finished.

Outfit formulas with navy
Each formula lists the colors from top to bottom. Swap the garments freely; the color relationships are what carry over.
Navy, white and brown leather
Navy chinos or trousers, a white shirt or tee, brown or tan shoes and belt. The default smart-casual outfit; it fits most offices and most weekends.
Camel over navy
A camel coat or knit with navy trousers, finished with cream or white sneakers. Warm against cool, and very forgiving.
The office trio
A navy blazer or knit, grey trousers, a white shirt. Burgundy shoes or a burgundy tie add depth without breaking the calm.
Three blues
A light blue shirt, a navy knit and mid-blue jeans. Keep the three blues clearly different in depth, and the tonal look reads deliberate.
Navy and mustard
A navy base with a mustard knit, scarf or overshirt. Mustard is close to navy's opposite on the wheel, muted enough to wear every day. Brown shoes suit it best.
Dark on dark
A navy suit or dress with a burgundy bag, tie or shoes. Both are deep colors, so the pairing looks rich rather than bright.
Shoes, bags and metals
Shoes
Brown and tan leather are the most versatile shoes with navy: they warm it up and suit everything from chinos to suits. Burgundy or oxblood is a classic step up. White sneakers keep navy casual. Black works when the outfit is formal and the navy is dark; with mid or bright navy it can look like a near miss.
Bags and belts
A cognac or tan bag is the safe choice. Burgundy gives a navy outfit a rich accent, and cream or white canvas suits summer. A common rule of thumb is to match the belt roughly to the shoes.
Metals
Silver keeps navy crisp and cool; gold makes it warmer and a touch more nautical. Both are fine. Many people pick one metal per outfit and repeat it in the watch, buckle and jewelry.
Colors to avoid with navy, and why
Nothing is forbidden. These are the pairings that most often look accidental rather than chosen, and what to do instead.
- Black, unless it is deliberate
Next to black, navy can read as almost black rather than as a choice, especially in daylight. It works when the contrast is obvious (black leather with mid navy) or in a dark evening look.
- A navy that nearly matches
Two navies that differ slightly, such as a navy blazer over different navy trousers, often look like a mistake. Go clearly lighter or darker, or pick grey.
- Forest green at the same depth
Two very dark colors of similar depth merge in low light. If you wear them together, put white or cream between them.
- Deep purple
Purple sits right next to blue but differs in temperature, so the two can muddy each other. A pale lavender works better than a deep plum.
Wearing navy through the year
In spring and summer, navy looks freshest with white, light blue, cream and coral, and with lighter fabrics such as linen and cotton. A navy linen shirt with white trousers, or navy shorts with a coral tee, keeps the dark color from feeling heavy in the heat.
In autumn and winter, navy moves toward its warm partners: camel, rust, mustard, burgundy and brown leather. Heavier textures such as flannel, corduroy and chunky knits make navy look richer, and a camel coat over navy is one of the most reliable cold-weather pairings there is.
Navy or black?
If you are choosing a single dark color to build around, navy is usually the friendlier one. It sits well with brown, tan and burgundy, which can look harsh next to black, and it looks less severe in daylight. Black is stronger at night and in very graphic, high-contrast outfits. Neither is more correct; navy simply has more easy partners.
Navy is also a good stand-in when an outfit asks for black but you want it softer: a navy suit at a daytime wedding, a navy coat over a camel knit, navy jeans instead of black ones.
Navy is a softer alternative to black that pairs with almost everything. In the matcher, the navy chip also suggests light blue and denim as tonal partners and burgundy or coral as accents.
Questions
Do black and navy go together?
They can. The pairing works best when the difference is easy to see, such as black leather shoes or a black bag with mid navy, or in a deliberately dark evening outfit. When the navy is very dark, the two can look like a mismatch.
What color shoes go with navy pants?
Brown and tan are the most versatile, burgundy is a classic, and white sneakers suit casual outfits. Black is fine with dark navy in formal outfits.
What color shirt goes with a navy suit?
White and light blue are the classic choices. Pink and pale lavender work for a softer look, and a grey or white knit under a navy suit suits more casual settings.
